As my husband and I approach our fifth wedding anniversary, I’ve been reflecting on the story of the Wedding at Cana. Among other analyses and interpretations, Christ’s participation at the wedding points to the place of marriage as a sacrament.
But what did Jesus do? He did not officiate the ceremony. He certainly was not married the same way that He was baptised. No, He celebrated. Moreover, he turned water into wine. Because of this, the couple and their guests could go on celebrating.

This got me thinking about what water Christ had turned to wine in the five short years we’ve been married…
We filled our jugs with the water of enjoyment of one another’s company. We now share in the wine of enjoyment of the company of our children and our family friends.
We filled our jugs with the water of a love for one another. We now drink the wine of our love for our beautiful children, and their love for one another and for us.
We filled our jugs with our gratitude for all His blessings to us as individuals. Now, they overflow with the wine of a faith that grows in trust and deepens with each passing year. A faith we live out, and a faith we are eager to share.
I think the wine I’m most grateful for is the wine that is still being transformed, day by day. You see, on the day of our wedding, we brought ourselves to the altar, an imperfect offering. That day, almost five years ago, we surrendered ourselves to Him, and to one another. And since that day, through the joys and the sorrows of life, we have been helping to shape one another as we grow in love and in holiness.

Christ continues, in every marriage, to turn the ordinary into the extraordinary; to turn our water into wine. Deo gratia.
Happy anniversary, my love. Cheers!
What water have you brought to Christ, and what wine has He transformed it all into? I’d love to know!!
Until next time, let’s pray for each other. And remember, we can do Mom things through Christ who strengthens us!
